About Me

Dr. Douglas (Doug) K. Smith, exemplifies his passion as a healthcare Thought Leader, and as a vested well-credential practitioner of Teleradiology certified Healthcare Informatist and Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems Society and a member of the elite HIMSS CHIME organization, as well as the exclusive International Skeletal Society. He is also the founder of PI360 Solutions™ and MyPINetwork℠, Certified Professional in Healthcare Information & Management Systems and an accepted member of the elite HIMSS CHIME organization and the exclusive International Skeletal Society. He is also a recognized thought leader, well-published, inventor and serial “doctorpreneur” .

Dr. Smith received his medical training at Wake Forest University Medical Center before pursuing orthopedic surgery residency training in training and orthopedic biomechanics for three years at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota. Dr. Smith then pursued radiology residency training at Mallinckrodt Institute at Washington University in St. Louis Missouri where he served as the single Chief Resident.

At the completion of his residency training, Dr. Smith was called to active duty for desert Storm is a major in the United States Air Force and served at Wilford Hall USAF medical center. In that capacity, Dr. Smith served as the chief of the radiology Residency Program, chief of Emergency Radiology, Chief of Outpatient Radiology and chief of Orthopedic Radiology.

He received special commendation for revising radiology and orthopedic workflow and collaboration system using process aclon team methodology. Dr. Smith was involved in military use of telemedicine including initial use of radiology image transmission using secure satellite transmission supportive Desert Storm military theater.

Dr. Smith was actively involved in grant funded research projects throughout his residency and military active duty and lectured extensively in the United States and Europe. Is the principal author of 35 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters and has presented scientific presentations at the Radiologic Society of North America, American Academy of Orthopedic Surgery, American Roentgen Ray Society, and award-winning presentation at the American Society of Spine Radiology.

After discharge from military service in 1995, Dr. Smith with engaged in private practice radiology in Charlotte North Carolina, before returning to San Antonio, Texas. Dr. Smith was an early pioneer in spinal interventional radiology including early adoption of percutaneous vertebroplasty as a radiology treatment for pain management in 1999.

In 2005, Dr. Smith founded Musculoskeletal Imaging Consultants, a national orthopedic and spine teleradiology company and served as the team radiologist for the US Ski and Snowboarding Team for four years. Dr. Smith created unique secure cloud-based medical collaboration platform to support the national teleradiology company. The is licensed to practice medicine in 35 states and maintains an active clinical teleradiology practice. is personally interpreted over 300,000 MRI examinations. Dr. Smith has created a private health information exchange and collaboration platform in San Antonio, Texas. He is extensive experience in the military, University, large private practice, small medical practice, and independent diagnostic imaging center realms and can speak to the clinical IT challenges as a stakeholder in each of those cultures.

Dr. Smith is a American Board of Preventive Medicine Board-Certified Clinical Informatist and holds 10 USPTO patents pending in the areas of interoperability, medical informatics, and medical collaboration technologies. Dr. Smith is a serial doctorpreneur, inventor, medical software designer, thought leader and advocate of Meaningful Collaboration.
